OK over lunch I did some more digging, it looks like the unable to find suitable kernel error has happened to others. One possible fix is to manually set the kernel to install when you reach the 'partition disk' step.

Ah, sorry, yes if you did not specify a block size you would have got 512bytes which should be just fine. I the problem does lie elsewhere.

Now if I remember correctly dd has a default block size of 512bytes, and most disks use a block size of 4K (4096 bytes) using a block size higher than the disk block size is not good. So the optimum dd command would be something like dd if=/dev/sdc of=/my/backup.dd bs=4096 conv=not...
