That is great Fleegman! I hope you did one heck of a victory lap. Those are significant bragging rights! Congratulations!

Cant wait to try it out! I have space left on my file sharing account that I set up last night. Be happy to host.

Alright, I finally completed the new tutorial.  I even included a YouTube video and you'll see how fast you can make one of these USB sticks.

Hope this helps everyone out --- but I'm still looking forward to the custom build that Bogdan will be making.

PS:
You might want to "sticky" this until we get a more streamlined build from Bogdan

Fleegman, hats off to you for the write up and all your hard work.

I have completed the how-to with complete success.

This will open lots of doors.  Having a fully functional boot option without the need of a hub and peripherals makes opening these puppies attainable, for the newb like me.  ;)

That's great to hear! Congrats on getting it up and running! I am really glad to hear that another person has Fleegmans tutorial working. Another poster said they had problems with opening lzm files to add an application. Any way you can try this?

Sure, I'll look into it.

I am curious about installing to the internal memory.  Is this advisable?

I have to do a little more reading about how to handle swap and such.  Is the internal drive rated for swap space, or will it be killed?  I remember reading about write backs, but I think that was in reference to the CF card.

quotaholic, you installed to internal drive, yes?  Is it faster than on the thumb drive?

If running NimbleX on the internal is OK, I will be quicker to verify my dd, finale.

One thing I would like to see is a minimize function for the virtual keyboard.

I love the shutdown voice, she is sexy.

LOL! As soon as I installed the last time around I got some funny after activity from my cdrom and at that point I had just agreed with Bogdan and was placing it in a box to ship it to him. On the first install I did it was a little faster installed than on the cd. I have never tried on a thumb drive.

When I did install it I only remember being asked about two partitions by the installer. One was the fat16 and one was the NimbleX partition. I would have to head over to their faq to find out if they utilize swap or not by default.

I am struggling with the .lzm

I have no experience with Slackware modules.

Questions:
  • Are Slax .lzm files compatible?
  • How can I right click?
  • Are we missing the package manager?  I see module manager, but it only wants .mo files
  • I tried the [activate] command in a terminal but that command was not found.
  • I had no problem downloading files.  I was able to move the .lzm to /boot/modules I don't know what to do from this point
  • How do I extract it?
Is this the same issue.  I would say my drive is write able.

The downloaded .lzm had the following permissions  rw-r--r--    is it supposed to be executable?  It is just in a wrapper and needs to be extracted, right?  Then I should get the .mo file to add to the /modules directory, yes?

After some major web searching I am near to conclusion.  Since we are using slax5 as a base, we should be using .mo files which were phased by Slax6, which uses the .lzm module system.

Here is a source for Slax5 modules

http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/slax/SLAX-5-modules/

Get'em while you can.  ;D

Anyone know the "Linux Terminal Server Client" equal.  I really hate VNC.

EDIT: I may have spoke a little soon.  I added the above link prior to downloading.  It looked so good.  Seems I am having trouble getting items to download.  They are displaying in the browser instead.  It is getting late for me, burnt out.

EDIT2- Found it.....    ftp://ftp.slax.org/SLAX-5-modules/

Here's some technical background on this tutorial (and I'm glad that it worked for someone else).

1. This "mix build" is based on Slax5 and NimbleX2007 ... which use compressed .MO files not .LZM's

2. Converting a .LZM  to  .MO causes 'haphazard' results if you don't convert them properly.  The best method to convert .LZM's to a functional .MO that can be used in Slax5 or NimbleX2007 would be in the following lengthly process:

Example:
Let's say you want "Firefox3.lzm" to be converted into a working .MO file to be use in Slax5/NimbleX2007 ... here's what you must do in order to get a foolproof conversion:

- access the .LZM file you want to convert in the native linux environment (ie: if the LZM is being loaded in Slax6, then boot into Slax6)

- within the 'native' environment of the .LZM file, access a terminal prompt and type the following:  unsquashfs Firefox3.lzm

- this will create a folder with the "unsquashed" contents ... just rename the folder to reflect the contents

- copy this "unsquashed" folder to a USB stick

- now, boot into the Slax5 or NimbleX2007 environment

- navigate to the "unsquashed" folder that you just copied onto your USB stick

- access a terminal prompt and type the following:  MO2DIR foldername  filename.mo
(replace foldername and filename with appropriate names)

- once the .MO is created, it will work properly in the Slax5 / NimbleX2007 environments.

Don use converters like "lzm2mo" or the likes, they break the package.  I've done many package conversions using the above process and it does not fail --- it just takes some time and patience.

Hopefully this clears things up.

Thanks that step by step was easy  :-*

My only issue was I had hidden files turned on in folder options.
So my first attempt failed .
But rebuilt the stick and it works fine.

I imagine you could dd this to cf card?

Thanks

No reason why you couldnt. The only thing is that no one has been able to get a DT to boot to the CF slot so far as I know.

Personally, until I find a sleeker & slimmer Linux build that is more responsive on the WebDT, I'm sticking to USB Booting.  Hopefully the build that Bogdan is working on will be much more responsive and have a faster boot-up process.

volkswagner,

For terminal server client I think you need rdesktop.

Dave.
