Penmount linux compatibility

Post by quotaholic »

I have been stuck on getting the penmount driver working in debian "lenny". It seems that everything goes fine with the installation. The installer even offers to make my xorg.conf file. How nice. Only when tested the touch panel does not operate. Quitting X I can see a module mismatch error dealing with the penmount module. That leads to many more errors.

So when in doubt read the manual. I downloaded the install manual from penmount and found interesting things.

Manual:
http://www.penmount.com/Download/DataSheet/PenMount%209000%20Controller%20Installation%20Guide%20V1.0.pdf

In the manual there is one page dedicated to linux and here is a copy of it:

Chapter 4 Software Functions
3.7.      Linux X Window RS-232 Driver Installation for
                    9000 Boards
Before installing the Linux X Window RS-232 driver for PenMount 9000 boards, you
must have the Linux X Window installed and running on your computer. You must
also have PenMount Serial Interface either 9026BH or 9036BH controller boards
          installed.
Linux X Window RS-232 driver for PenMount 9000 boards supports the following
          operating systems:
                                    O.S. Supported:
                      Ubuntu 8.04            Red Hat 9.0
                      Ubuntu 7.10            Red Hat 7.3/8.0
                      Ubuntu 6.06/6.10/7.04 Suse 11
                      Debian 3.1              Suse 10.2/10.3
                      Fedora 9                Suse 10.1
                      Fedora Core8            Suse 10.0
                      Fedora Core5/6/7        Suse 9.3
                      Fedora Core4            Suse 9.2
                      Fedora Core4_64bit      Suse 8.0/9.0/9.1
                      Fedora Core3            Linux XFree86 4.x.x
                      Slackware12.0          Linux XFree86 3.3.6
                      Slackware10.0          Linux For GPM

Based on this I can understand why lenny is not going so well for me.

Just a reminder, when in doubt, read the manual

I had the same problem with Vector Linux ... installation of drivers went through successfully and the xorg.conf had the proper changes, but touch point was unresponsive.

The really odd thing about it all is that Vector Linux is based on the same type of slackware builds as NimbleX and Slax... so the drivers should have worked with no problems at all.

My guess is that maybe the person who made these builds have removed some type of "key" piece of software element to avoid having touchscreen work no matter what is installed ... thinking that no-one would ever use their Linux distros on a touch screen device.
